PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Portal is a mark of commemoration for the late Lina Bo Bardi and the impact she has made in Brazil and beyond. In acknowledgement of Bo Bardi as a prolific Architect and one of the few renown women in this field, this monument is a potential catalyst to honour, encourage and recognise other notable and growing female designers across the globe.
The Portal is a marker of many things, firstly it is an abstraction of perhaps Bo Bardi’s most notable and impactful work, the MASP in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A pair of significant red portals suspend the upper portion of the museum above a public plaza. Therefore, the design of her marker originates here with the portal. The Portal is reduced to a small scale and transformed into a seamless frame. Lifted just above the ground’s surface the Portal achieves a desired lightness, enhancing clarity in its form. Residing in the plaza, the Portal additionally serves as a Pavilion where people can interact, sit and gather.
In conjunction with its urban function and visual significance reminiscent of the MASP, the Portal permits another strong attribute as a marker. It provides the opportunity to spread awareness and education on the design, Bo Bardi herself and a global connection to other female designers through an interactive screen that provides info on the MASP and the Architect. From there visitors can continue to a map providing locations of other female works which they can view in real time via the Portal’s screen. Over time, this map aims to grow in locations by continuously adding markers to the works of female designers.
